Over the years I have been very fortunate to have been able to work with many extremely interesting and talented people. Everyone from Hollywood actors to three Prime Ministers, even some personal heroes like Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe.
I’ve had the chance to learn from some of the pioneers in the business and to work in periods now deemed to be some of the highlights of the industry. One of the things that I have learned is that we never stop learning, and with technology changing as quickly as it does now, keeping up is more challenging than it has ever been. I have also learnt that no matter how simple technology can make things appear, it will never replace the skill that comes from experience, patience and a dedication to the "craft" of a profession. Owning a word processor makes you no more an author then owning a paintbrush can make you a great artist. Skills and experience are built over time and can only truly flourish in the hands of someone passionate about their craft. I have been very lucky to have worked with many passionate people and it spreads an infectious optimism about everything you approach.
While all creative pursuits have their challenging times, I have experienced that a great professional team working together can overcome most obstacles in their path, be it budgetary, time or technical challenges. I have seem some amazing results grow from adversary conditions and while it is not always easy and tempers are frayed along the way, a great team can pull together and create brilliance if everyone is working towards a common goal.
I guess I’m lucky enough to work with the people that I do, who are all committed to producing great things, and it seems I attract or gravitate to like-minded people in new projects to continue this aim. There is nothing better than watching master crafts-people at work, quietly achieving good things with a commitment to their skill and a quiet diligence to getting the job done, and I am very proud to be a part of an industry that fosters this kind of approach to its work.
I very much enjoy the process of sharing my skills with newcomers to the industry, and working with organisations like The International Film College on the Gold Coast, the Queensland School of Film and Television in Brisbane and SAE Byron Bay allow me to work with and develop new talent and share some of the things that I have learned and continue to learn along the way. Teaching also makes sure that you don't become complacent – usually the first question a student will ask you is always the hardest to answer! I love the honesty and enthusiasm that comes from working with these people (even if they refuse to believe that we used to edit with razor blades and sticky tape!).
If we are working together now, let's continue to do so - I have reached a point in my life where I choose not to do things that I don't enjoy :) If we haven't yet worked together then let’s give it a go! I love the challenge of a new crew, new production and new approaches and there is nothing more stimulating than a creative challenge.
Thank you to everyone who has been a great influence on me over the years and thank you to those yet to come!
